Be involved

Stay connected

Pursue your interests

I joined the Houston Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators, (IABC Houston) many years ago and remain active. I have also participated with other organizations, attending luncheons, conferences and even happy hours as time and money allow. Is it worth it?

Be part of something. Make the investment and enjoy the rewards.

Absolutely. It’s these connections, resources and friendships that have driven my career and helped me with a successful path to start a company.

Yes, everyone is busy and there are deadlines to meet, but taking time to participate in an organization like IABC Houston will pay off ten-fold. It’s one of the best places to learn new information and skills that give you a leg up on the career ladder. Over the course of your career, you will need contacts and people you can turn to you as a mentor or an advisor. It’s a place where you can grow your confidence and even win awards and recognition that will stand out on your resume.

And then there are the friendships. You can’t really put a price on that. Make the time to not only get to know these folks as great business advisors, but also friends. They will be there when it counts.

Which leads me to my last point. How all of the above gave me the strength and courage to step out of my comfort zone and start a public relations/communication firm. And it’s paid off. Not only have contacts I’ve met through IABC Houston led to contracts, they have also led to partnerships and ideas that are paving my way for a successful business venture. So stop with the excuses – I don’t have time, it costs too much, etc. Whichever organization you select; be involved, stay connected and pursue your interests. Make the investment and enjoy the rewards.
